Reasons to be training

  • money saved

No-one has money to spare just now, or so we're told. The training budget (if there ever was one) is often the first one to get cut. And yet, no business can afford to ignore the wider issues that face us all - buying and using IT effectively; taking account of changing markets; running our businesses safely, ethically and legally - not to mention keeping the customer more satisfied that the competition can.

There are lots of reasons to see training as a worthwhile investment, rather than a cost - even more so when times are tough. Here are three of the best:

  • Keep the customers satisfied
  • Customers (bless 'em) make the business go round. They expect only the best; they judge your business by the service you provide for them. Trained, competent and confident staff will keep your customers coming back.
By keeping your customers' loyalty you will lower your spend on marketing and sales
  • Retain and prosper
  • Research shows that most people are not motivated only by money when they change jobs. If you develop your people, it shows that you value them, which means they're more likely to stay - and you get to keep the valuable people.
By training the good people you already have you will save on the high cost of recruiting new staff
  • Train trainers, multiply skills
  • Tap into the skills you already have in your business. By developing people to train others in-house, you can multiply the asset that is your skills and knowledge base.
You will save money because more people will get it right first time
Finally... this is our favourite excuse for not training people:

"If we train our staff, they'll only leave to go somewhere else"

If you put that another way, it sounds like this:

"We prefer to be incompetent, thank you!"
